AutoNation Inc. (NYSE:AN) announced a 12% rise in new vehicles sales to 20,534 units in April 2012. The improvement in sales was attributable to higher sales in all its segments compared to the comparable month of the prior year.
Sales in the Domestic segment went up 9% to 6,306 units. The segment comprises of retail automotive franchises that sell vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F), General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) and Chrysler. During the month, the automotive retailers sales of Ford vehicles went up 4%.
Sales in the Import segment hiked 16% to 10,358 units. The segment comprises of retail automotive franchises that sell vehicles produced by Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE:TM), Honda Motor Co. (NYSE:HMC) andothers.The retailers sales of Toyota-made vehicles escalated 29% in the reported month.
Light vehicle sales in the U.S depicted a sluggish growth of 2.3% to 1.18 million units from 1.16 million units in April last year. Meanwhile, it went up 9.5% to seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 14.42 million units from 13.17 million units in the year-ago month.
The sluggish growth was attributable to lower sales performance of the two biggest players in the industry #x2013; General Motors and Ford, and fewer selling days (due to more Sundays in the month compared with April 2011). However, auto sales were favorably affected by fuel-efficient lineups and pent-up demand.

“Driving in a fuel-efficient manner is an easy choice which Canadians
can make that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower their
fuel costs,” said Mr. Holder. “Auto$mart teaches new drivers the same
fuel-saving techniques that participants are learning during
Eco-Run.”
The program works with driver educators nation-wide to introduce new
drivers to fuel-efficient driving techniques. Over 2,000 driving
instructors offer the training as part of their curriculum, and over

Deputy Police Commissioner in charge of Operations Jack Ewatski has denied saying there were 300 police vehicles at the Vehicle Maintenance Corporation (VMCOTT). Referring to an article in yesterday’s Guardian newspaper, Ewatski said he was surprised to read that VMCOTT’s CEO Robert Charbonne was denying there were 300 police vehicles on the compound.
“I certainly did not say there were 300 police vehicles at VMCOTT. That is totally incorrect…totally false. “What I did say was there were some 300 police vehicles which were non-operational…I never even once mentioned VMCOTT by name,” Ewatski said. He said the Police Service has always maintained a professional relationship with VMCOTT which was always cordial.
Ewatski said Charbonne had written to him reinforcing VMCOTT’s commitment to working with the Police Service and ensuring vehicles were delivered in a timely fashion. Ewatski said the figure of 300 was “fluid,” as the vehicles were repaired, disposed of or replaced. He said there were some 80 vehicles waiting to be auctioned while others which were involved in road traffic accidents were kept at the police stations until reports were finalised and submitted.
On Tuesday, Ewatski met with Assistant Police Commissioner (Mobile) Terry Archibald, Supt in charge of Transport Ragbar Gopersad and the service’s fleet manager Michael Julius. An audit has begun of all vehicles in the Police Service and a database system to assist in fleet management is to be introduced.
Ewatski has also denied that police vehicles were being sent to private garages to be repaired. “I have no knowledge of that…That is not the case,” he said.

WASHINGTON The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Monday issued an Imminent Hazard Operations Out-of-Service Order against a Georgia-based logging company that was caught red-handedoperating after being ordered by the agency to cease operations for an unsatisfactory safety fitness rating.
The FMCSA said on Nov. 23, 2011, it had conducted an on-site review of the carrier,Judson Mobley Logging,uncovering violations so serious as to demonstrate a management philosophy indifferent to motor carrier safety, resulting in a Compliance Review rating of unsatisfactory.
On Jan. 30, 2012, after failing to correct the violations uncovered in the Compliance Review, FMCSA ordered the carrier to cease operations.
The continued operation of Judson Mobleyapparently came to light after one of the carriers logging tractor trailer units crashed into an escorted tractor-trailer carrying a military airplane on US Highway 301 in South Carolina on April 30.
The FMCSA website shows that the carrier had not been stopped for any roadside inspections between Jan. 30 and the April crash, and absent of a roadside inspection or a reported accident the FMCSA would have had no knowledge the carrier was continuing to operate.
At the scene of the accident, the South Carolina Transport police officers placed Judson Mobleys vehicle out-of-service for defective brakes, and discovered 20 other vehicle maintenance violations.
In the order Monday, the FMCSA cited the carriers CSA scores of 99.1 percent in Vehicle Maintenance and 98.1 percent in Driver Fitness, both well above the threshold for intervention.
The carriers Safety Management System records showed one of its trucks had been stopped for roadside inspections six times between Aug. 4, 2010, and Aug. 2, 2011, and was cited for a total of 48 vehicle maintenance violations, including 16 violations during the Aug. 2 inspection.
During four of the inspections, the driver of the truck was cited for violations, including twice for driving while disqualified, an out-of-service violation.
During the Aug. 2 inspection, the vehicle maintenance violations included:
No/defective lighting devices/reflective devices/projected (non-OOS)
Failure to correct defects noted on inspection report (non-OOS)
Wheel/rim cracked or broken (OOS)
Wheel fasteners loose and/or missing (non-OOS)
Stop lamp violations (non-OOS)
Clamp/Roto-Chamber type brake(s) out of adjustment (non-OOS)
Inoperative/defective brakes (OOS)
Automatic brake adjuster CMV manufactured on or after 10/20/1994 – air brake (non-OOS)
ABS – malfunctioning lamps towed CMV manufactured on or after 3/1/1998, manufactured before 3/1/2009 (non-OOS)
Tire other tread depth less than 2/32 of inch;
Exhaust leak under truck cab and/or sleeper (non-OOS)
Inoperative tail lamp (non-OOS)
Inoperative turn signal (non-OOS)
Inspection/repair and maintenance parts and accessories (non-OOS)
Unsafe operations forbidden (non-OOS);
Retro-reflective tape not affixed as required for trailers manufactured after 12/1/1993 (non-OOS).
Many of the violations in the Aug. 2 inspection had been cited in one or more of the previous five inspections.
The FMCSA was checking to determine if the truck involved in the accident was the same one that had been subjected to the six roadside inspections.
